sandhill country. It was reminiscent of an Arnold Palmer gallery of past years. "I had to do something pretty spectacular to win." said Crenshaw, who made up 15 strokes in the last three days. "I just wasn't up to it. "I don't know how in the world I even managed to finish second from where I was.

I'm just tickled to death." He had a shot at victory, trailing by one shot, until he tried to "let it cul real big on my tee shot." on the Kith tee. It's a 504-yard, par-five that he can reach in two. But he hit it in the woods, chipped out. bunkered his third and made a bogey six. "That pretty well killed my chances." said Crenshaw, a three-time national collegiate champion at the University of Texas.

Still, he collected $44.175 from the total purse of $500,000 and pushed his earnings to more than $76,000 in just five starts as a pro. Leonard Thompson took third with 71-575. He was never in the title chase. Tom Watson the leader through the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds -quickly faded back, finished with a 77 and tied Al Geiberger for fourth at 576. Palmer was not a factor.

He had a final round 76 and 586 in his last American start of the year. Nicklaus, along with Tom Weiskopf and Lee Trevino. did not compete. IMNEIIUKST. N.C.

(API Miller Barber got the big check, but Ben Crenshaw got the big attention. "I think I beat the next Jack Nicklaus," the 42-ycar-old Barber said after his final round G9 gave him a three-stroke victory over the youthful Crenshaw, probably the most exciting rookie to come along since Nicklaus turned pro. Barber earned a $100,000 check the biggest golf prize in history after total won the 144-hole, two-week World Open Golf Tournament Saturday. The total was two-over-par and represented the first over-par winning total in a year on the pro tour. Crenshaw was within one stroke of the top spot until he tried to overpower a tee shot on the par-five Kith and hit it into the woods.

He finished with a 71-573. The gallery was with the strong, stocky, 21-year-old blond all the way. There was a gathering of only about 1,500 for the final round that was played in cool, breezy weather, but most were rooting for the young man who had won the San Antonio-Texas Open only two weeks before. Cries of "go get em. Ben," and "Charge 'em, IiOnghorn," and "Best 'em echoed through the piney woods in this Carolina Miller Barber is happy and he ought to be.

He won $100,000 to go along with the World Open title Sunday and finished the two-week long golf tourney with an eight-round total of 570, two over par for 144 holes, (UPI Telepholo) Bowls at a glance 'Hie major poxl-Hcmum and all-slur college football games, wilh starting times, where known: Dec. Calif. (AP) Lloyd Mangrum, one of golf's elite of the 1940s and 1950s and winner of the U.S. Open, is dead at the age of 59. The sharp-tongued, quickwitted Mangrum, was stricken by a heart attack and died at his home in this high desert community on Saturday. He had lived here since the early 1950s.

When he retired, a writer dubbed him "The Squire of Apple Valley," a title Mangrum disliked but wore with humor. No funeral services were nlannpd. shooter," said Matthews of his 6-3 center in Walrod. Moore will be operating in the backcourt. "He's a good shooter and passes the ball exceptionally well," noted the Central Linn coach.

Three other seniors include Clay Lunsford. Ken Barley and Bob Canaday. Lunsford appears to be a starter at the forward spot. "He's really a good team player." added Matthews. Juniors on the squad are Les Eversull, Tony Ridinger, Greg Davidson and Randy Thornton.

"I'm very disciplined," said Matthews of his style, "but the kids have really adjusted to my style. They have really made an effort to please me. "And that's important to me." continued. "1 try to spend twice as much time on defense than offense." But for the first week of practice "it has been just plain fundamentals," stressed Matthews. "Passing, shooting, dribbling and stuff like that." Being a new coach means some changes in style and philosophy.

It also means spending a little extra time to adjust. But Matthews is finding it isn't so at Central Linn. "We're making pretty good progress," he said. "The thing I'm impressed with about these kids is their attitude. I'm really impressed wilh their attitude.

They play well together and none of the kids are selfish. "They're pretty sound defensively fnom last year. And defense is going to be the name of the game in this week's basketball practice at Central Linn High School, asserted Larry Matthews, the Cobras new coach. "It's harder to teach," said Matthews of defense.

"It takes more work, especially more team work with the switches have the guys talk to each other and help each other out. "Offense is easier," he adjustments," said Matthews. "I think we'll surprise a few people before the year is over. The kids think that way and I know I do." Matthews knows it may take a little time to transform the Cobras into a unified winning unit. "We have a lot of young kids," he explained.

Along with five seniors and four juniors, Central Linn will have a sophomore and a freshman the Grossniklaus brothers. Dave, a 6-2 sophomore, is battling for a starting forward spot while Peter, a freshman, has earned a varsity spot and may be seeing considerable action. Forming the nucleus for Central Linn will be two senior lettermen, Steve Walrod and Tom Moore.
