Lebanon gives Corvallis a scar Rtbanij E)cmocrat-fcralD Wednesday, Feb. 27, 1974, Page 25 PORTS got hot and the Spartans opened 53-48 advantage with 4:40 left. "I'll admit that none of us felt we were going to have this kind of trouble beating Lebanon," said Kinney. "We were all probably guilty of taking wins for granted." Stepp concurred. "We had them and blew it," he said.

"They weren't ready to play, and we outhustled them, dominated the boards (41-35), pressured them on defense and ran them on the fast break. It was merely mental mistakes and those long shots of Beck's that killed us." Spark missing By KERRY EGGERS Democrat-Herald Writer CORVALLIS Theoretically, Glen Kinney Corvallis High School hoop mentor, figured it would be little more than a breeze. As it was, the Spartans almost got caught in a whirlwind. Lebanon gave Corvallis, the state's top rated basketball quintet, its biggest scare in the Valley League this year before succumbing 60-53 Tuesday. Afterwards Warrior coach Dean Stepp was fuming not at his players' performance, but at the inability to handle the tough Spartan half court press in the "We had no problem with the presses all year," the Warrior mentor groaned after the game.

"This is the first time we've ever really gotten rattled. It was those mental errors against their half court press we had men open, but we didn't have courage to find them. The kids lost their poise, and it cost us the ball game." Stepp was in a hole to begin with when Mike Bressler, the senior guard who runs the offense, and was Stepp's "best defensive player," suffered a compound dislocation of his thumb in practice Monday. Bressler will be out for the season. But Kinney had returned the favor when Alan Gustafson broke his foot last weekend.

As it turned out, it was a gunning duel between Rex Anderson, Gutsy 6-4 Warrior veteran, and Terry Beck, a young but game 6-3 Spartan junior. J-5 1 LEBANON (S3) But not before Corvallis played perhaps Its worst quarter of the year, an eight-point first period. "They played us pretty darn well," said Kinney, whose club was blanked for the first four minutes but trailed only 2-0. "That was part of the reason for our shooting problem. I don't know about the rest The rest resulted in no field goals for starters Rich Freeark, Larry Reynolds and Tim Smith in the first half.

"I feel that a good, fast breaking team can give Corvallis trouble," said Stepp. "They're not used to anybody trying to run with them. That's what we tried to do." With Anderson and freshman Andy McClouskey, the little dynamo, scoring heavily, Lebanon burst, 18-18, 28-17 and 34-22 before ending the first half with a 34-24 advantage. Hardly odd, the Warriors matched bucket to bucket with the wild-eye'd Sparts as the third period got under way. But Beck and Corvallis' pinching half court press came alive and gradually narrowed the gap.

Then Craig Conte, a 6-3 reserve forward, came on to replace Smith. Combining' free throws, rebounds and steals with a fade away hook, he cut the Lebanon lead to 42-40. But Anderson and Jeff Willems, a starter in Bresler's place, banged home jumpers and the Warriors maintained a 46-43 margin with a quarter, left. McClouskey, who had been blanked in the third period, stepped home on a jumper to make it 48-43 as the final period began. The Celtics gained an early lead and were able to maintain control of the game. McNary held a nine-point advantage at halftime, 30-21, but widen the gap by nine points in the third quarter. The Celtics haven't adopted any changes since the departure of coach Pete Bryant, according to Barrett.

"There hasn't been any great changes," he said. Vic Backlund has replaced Bryant who had open heart surgery recently. "He has been around there," added Barrett noting1 that Backlund was a Junior varsity coach under Bryant. "They just shot the ball well," Barrett said. Andy Bardosi led the Celtics with 16 points.JJut he had solid support from his teammates.

Doug Peterson added 14 and Randy Nelson 12. Todd Brem paced the Bulldogs with 16. But he was the lone Bulldog to hit four double figures. West Albany's shooting wasn't up to par, at least not like McNary. The Bulldogs will be attempting to break a three-game losing streak Friday by hosting the South Albany Rebels.

If yy' By FRED WESTERLUND Democrat-Herald Writer "We got a good jump on them," smiled North Salem coach Lou Littlejohn. "Our press early in the game gave us momentum. "And we were able to maintain the lead." But it took some slow down tactics, too.

Holding off a late South Albany surge, North Salem ran for an 82-59 Valley League prep basketball victory Tuesday over the hosting Rebels. It was a dubious home finale appearance for South Albany. The Rebels failed to stop a nine-game losing streak. Add number 10 to the list. But with the exception of a slow start and a late relapse, the Rebels made a strong showing against the Vikings.

"It was our best effort in a few ball games," acknowledged South Albany coach Fed Sandgren. After the Vikings had seemingly ran off with the game by piling up a 28-point bulge late in the third quarter, South Albany nursed comeback hopes by cutting the gap to 13 points, 71-58, in the final stanza. But Littlejohn reinstated Bryon Peterson in the lineup and the Vikings went into a control offense. With reason. "We tried to get control of the game," he acknowledged.

"The reserves had lost our big lead." North Salem regained its composure to put the win away in the frenzied moments when tempers of both teams flared. But the Rebels got too far behind in the first Em ploying a sticky press defense effectively, North Salem gunned to a 12-0 lead before Steve Douglas broke the ice for the Rebels with a basket. It was the press that did the damage against South Albany. Turnovers, and there were numerous, resulted in baskets for the quick and alert Viking defencers. "We shot very well early in the game.

That was definitely a factor, too," added Littlejohn. That and the press. "We couldn't adjust to it," noted Sandgren of North Salem's defense. "We didn't adjust to for a whole half. We didn't handle the' ball well." Sandgren wasn't too pleased with the defensive efforts of the Rebels, either.

"We were hestitating in picking up people coming down the floor it resulted in quick baskets," he said. North Salem's curly haired' Peterson put life in the Vikings' defense. And he wasn't bad on offense, either, scoring 18 points. John Noack backed him up with 14 while Rick Hartley added 13 and Ed French 12. Scoring honors went to Mike Shackelford of South Albany with a 22-point performance.

Neil Elshire added 16. It was the latter who spurred the Rebels in the fourth period with nine points. South Albany didn't help itself at the free throw line. The Rebels fired a poor 13 of 31 at the line and missed several first shots of one and one situations. The Rebels will be attempting to untrack Friday against cross-town rival West Albany in the Bulldog gym.

DUANE BARRETT Team lacked spark SALEM The spark wasn't there. "I was kind of disappointed," acknowledged coach Duane Barrett. "We seemed flat didn't have that extra spark you need to win." But McNary did. And the hosting Celtics ran off with a 69-47 Valley League prep basketball win Tuesday over the West Albany Bulldogs. "The kids wanted to win.

I'm sure of that," stated Barrett, More sports on pages 26, 27 "but we didn't have the mental sharpness to play well. "We committed a lot of pretty basic errors. Things we haven't been doing for some time like stepping over the free throw line. a lot of basic mental errors." It all adds up to a loss. What West Albany lacked, McNary didn't.

"They shot the ball real well," Barrett pointed out. And against the Bulldogs' press. "We tried to put the pressure on them, but they brought the ball down the floor against our press and got good shots. They didn't get many layins, but they got the 15-footers. fg fl-fta pf tp Parsons 1 2-2 14 Brem 5 2 16 Clunes 1 04 2 2 Harper 2 0-1 1 4 Fortier 1 0-12 2 Sorte 0 (M) 0 0 Saylor 2 3-6 3 7 Simmons 0 04 0 0 Wolski 0 3-5 0 3 Cushman 0 04 0 0 Hopfer 0 0-2 0 0 Torgeson 4 1-2 2 9 Totals 16 16-24 14 47 McNARY (69) fg ft-fta pf tp Quesnel -3 3-4 19 Peterson 7 04 3 14 Coons I 2-2 2 4 (Idle i I 2-2 0 4 Bardosi 7 2-2 2 16 Nelson 4 4-4 4 12 Gruenfelder -1 04 I 2 Kclsh 2 2-2 1 6 Taylor 1 04 1 2 Koenig 0 04 2 0 Zach 0 04 2 0 Johnson 0 0-110 Totals 29 15-17 21 69 Score by quarters: WestAlbany 10 11 9 17-47 McNary 16 14 18 21-69 Make your Gas last!
