Linn firefighters battling blaze in eastern Oregon Lightning storm bypasses mid-valley after hitting Grants Pass, Medford BY ALBANY DEMOCRAT-HERALD SWEET HOME Nineteen firefighters from Linn County have been battling the Egley Complex fire in eastern Oregon since late Tuesday, according to Sweet Home Fire Chief Mike Beaver. The action came after Gov. Kulongoski enacted the Emergency Conflagration Act for the fire burning west of Hines.

That allowed the State Fire Marshal's Office to mobilize firefighters and equipment from around the state. Five firefighters are from Sweet Home, four each from Albany, Lebanon and Harrisburg, and two from Brownsville. Sweet Home also sent a brush engine, a structural fire engine, a command vehicle and command staff. Brownsville sent a tender. Other strike teams were sent from Deschutes, Marion and Polk counties.

The Egley Complex fire has burned grass and brush and threatened 147 structures including residences, commercial buildings and outbuildings. It is composed of about 20 individual fires. As of this morning, it was about 15 percent contained. Lightning-caused fires in Central Oregon are partially controlled, but a new storm moving in from California could bring lightning, according to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center. The Millican East fire is 19 miles northwest of Brothers on Bureau of Land Management property.

It covers 2,778 acres and is 90 percent contained. The 334-acre 428 fire, which burned approximately seven miles north of Paulina, is contained. Sizzling temperatures that brushed triple digits Tuesday cured already dry grasses and downed forest materials this week, according to Kevin Crowell, Sweet Home unit forester with the Oregon Department of Forestry. His staff is on high alert. All scheduled days off for staff members have Public invited to participate in doctor's decathlon fundraiser Tim Hindmarsh, a physician at Sweet Home Family Medicine, will start his annual 24-hour decathlon to raise money to fight diabetes with windsurfing tonight in the Columbia River Gorge.

been cancelled so a full crew is available in case a fire either caused by people or lightning takes off. Crowell said he was in the Middle Fork area Tuesday about 10:30 a.m. and it was already 90 degrees. "Everything is completely dried out," Crowell said. "It's really dry out there.

Knock on wood that we haven't had a fire." ODF crews have not been sent to the eastern Oregon fires, but this morning, two firefighters and a 300-gallon engine were dispatched to Roseburg, after numerous lightning strikes were reported last night. "We didn't get the storm, but i it came up and hit Grants Pass and Medford real hard," Jim Basting of the Sweet Home unit said this morning. "The storm came right up the valley, hit the top of the Douglas and Lane county line and then took a hard left and headed toward Reedsport. There were lots of lightning strikes. So far, we've been lucky, but there are predictions lightning may move our way tonight.

We're fortunate the temperature went down yesterday and today." WEST VALLEY LAW GROUP P.C.
