EL feu Fire department gathering toys, food for those in need BY MIX PMJL ALBANY DEMOCRAT-HERALD SWEET HOME Last Christmas, nearly 500 children and 200 families benefitted from the Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree set up at the Sweet Home Fire District office, 1099 Long St. Fire Chief Mike Beaver anticipates need will be even greater this year. For more than 50 years Sweet Home firefighters and ambulance staff members have gathered toys and food items for needy area families.

"In the old days, the firefighters actually took in old toys and repaired them," Beaver said. Now, people are asked to visit the fire department and pick a card off a decorated Christmas tree. The card includes information about a child's needs, including sizes for shirts, pants and shoes, as well as a toy suggestion. "This there seems to be even greater need," Beaver said. "We're seeing people ask for clothing items instead of toys." Beaver said the community has always been "very supportive of the program.
