ALBANY DEMOCRAT HERALD, WEDNESDAY, DEC. 19, 1979 1 9 Lebanon sets 3 school swimming records; South sweeps McKay defense," said DeAutremont. "We held them to 18 field goals and they shot 64 times. That's only 29 per cent, and I think our defense had a lot to do with that." Workhorse Paul Jansen led C.Linn, scoring 18 points and hauling in 19 rebounds. Jansen got able support from teammates Mike Babcock, Rick Knuths and Eric and Damon Doerfler.

The foursome had 10 points apiece. The Cobras don't play again until Dec. 27 when they travel to Woodburn for another non-league game. Central Linn hot, wins again for 3rd victory in four games Oregon colleges HALSEY Memories of the basketball misfortunes suffered by Central Linn last year are quickly fading and it's not because of elapsed time. Rather, it's because the Cobras are spending more time in the best side of the win-loss column this season.

The Cobras, who won just four games a year ago, proved it is for real this season, capturing its third win in four outings with a 75-61 non-league victory over Oakridge Tuesday night. Central Linn's only loss was a one- point set-back to Pleasant Hill, a team it later beat 59-49. "I'm pretty pleased with the progress up to this point," said Cobras' Coach Chuck DeAutremont. "This game was very important to us because Oakridge is a good team. They gave Philomath a run, and Philomath is supposed to be pretty strong." The key for Central Linn, as it had been in the three previous games, was a water-tight defense.

64 McMINNVILLE There were few surprises Tuesday when Lebanon traveled to McMinnville for a dual swimming meet. Warrior girls, picked by many to win district, won 94-64 and three school records in the process. Meanwhile, the Lebanon boys lost to one of the state's best dual meet teams, 99-57. Even so, the Warriors still set one school record. Margeret Wetherell broke the Lebanon 200 freestyle relay eight seconds, 5:42.2.

Mark Maahs paced Harrisburg with 23. Center Brent Woods, who scored 24 against Scio last week, finished with 11. Scio loss, but Coach Dave Hamlin viewed Tuesday's 70-58 loss to Harrisburg in a different perspective. His Loggers, beaten by the Eagles last Friday by 28 points, made Tuesday's match a tight game. Scio, in fact, led once early in the first half and wasn't out of the game until the late stages.

"We played better than we did last week," said Harrisburg Coach Dave Shelby, whose team is 5-0 overall, "and Scio played a whole lot better. I'm impressed the way they improved since Fri Harrisburg broke the game open early at 8-0, but this time Scio didn't fold. It took a 15-13 edge in the first quarter, Scio's only lead of the game, but Harrisburg led narrowly at the half, 31-27. Harrisburg had to play most of the game without guard Brian Brown, who picked up three early fouls. Mark Smucker helped take up the slack at guard and scored 16 points.

"We just had too many turnovers." Hamlin said. NFL playoffs Linn-Benton girls reach LBCC finals Stretching its season record to 4-1, Linn-Benton Community College's women's basketball team earned a spot in tonight's championship game of the four-team LBCC tournament, whipping Judson Baptist 61-41 Tuesday night. Umpqua Community College, now 6-1, dumped Lane 74-61 in Tuesday's opener. The LBCC-Umpqua title game starts at 9 o'clock in the Roadrunner gymnasium. Jean Melson, a freshman from Tillamook, led LBCC with 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Lebanon's Debbie Prince added 14 for the Roadrunners, who led just 26-21 at half but then clamped a tough half court press to open a lead, forcing 31 JB turnovers. "The game was closer than the score indicates," LBCC Coach Dave Dangler said.

"Our trap the second half enabled us to spurt and get a pretty good lead, and we got a lot of follow shots on the offensive boards." GERVAB You wouldn't believe what happened to Jefferson's basketball team Tuesday night, and Coach Jim Kalember didn't want to. Just when it appeared that the Lions were headed for win No. 4 of the season, disaster struck. After leading by 10 points in the first half and shooting 50 pecent afield, the Lions took a tailspin the final two quarters, missing 21 of 23 field goal shots, and losing 43-40 to Gervais. Earlier this month Jefferson had beaten Gervais by seven points.

"They (Gervais) didn't do anything different in the second half," said Jefferson Coach Jim Kalember, "we just choked. There was a lack of intensity and movement. In the fourth quarter turnovers and lack of concentration hurt us." In the first quarter the Lions went up 15-9 and extended their lead to 29-19 at the half. Jefferson then made only one field goal in the third period and was outscored 13-9, pulling Gervais within 38-32. The fourth quarter was a diaster for the Lions.

They were held to two points, losing the lead with two minutes left. After Gervais went in front by two, Forrest Grizzel tied it with two free throws. Then, Gervais took the lead for good on a three-point play with a minute remaining. Arnie Buchan led Jefferson with 13 points, while teammate Bryan Tilley had 10. The loss dropped the Lions to .500 at 3-3, while Gervais picked up its first win of the season.

Crescent Valley, a team many have picked to challenge Corvallis and South Salem for the title, showed why Tuesday. The Raiders belted Sprague 84-56 in their opener (C.V. is 5-0 overall) and made it easy. Cliff Fairchild, a 6-5 junior forward, led the Raiders with 27 points. Corvallis High School was expected to get off to a good start in Valley League basketball action Tuesday night, but no one expected a 39-point blitz.

But that's just what happened when the preseason favorites whacked McNary of Salem 72-33 in a runaway conference-opening victory in Corvallis. The Spartans, 12-4 a year ago in its first non-title season in seven years, got 17 points from 6-foot-6 forward Randy Worster, a transfer from Texas. Corvallis was able to rest its starters most of the way after taking an overwhelming 33-14 halftime lead.
