16 ALBANY DEMOCRAT HERALD, MONDAY. APRIL 28. 1980 Dodgers (8 straight) do it with U' Major league baseball i MATTICK SUTTON Art Howe by losing pitcher Neil Allen, 0 3, and scored Cedeno and pinch runner Terry Puhl. AMERICAN LEAGUE Rookies make mistakes. Even rookie managers.

Even 64 year-old rookie managers like Toronto's Bobby Mattick. Mattick submitted the wrong lineup card before Sunday's game In Milwaukee but that's about the only boo boo he committed all weekend as the high-flying Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the hard hitting Brewers, 8 2. "That's the dunce hat," Mattick said afterward, wearing a maroon cap with pink tails in the shape of horns on the sides. "I won it hands down today. I had two different lineups and took the wrong one up.

What a stupid mistake." The surprising Blue Jays are the only team In the American League East playing better than .500. Sunday's victory gave them an 8-6 record 5-0 against Milwaukee and they are in first place, one game ahead of the New York Yankees. Even early in the season that's rather elevated atmosphere for a club that lost 107, 102 and 109 games in Its first three seasons of last place existence and never finished closer to the top than 45'j games. TWINS 20, A'l 11: Minnesota scored 10 runs In the first Inning, Including two run singles by Glenn Adams and Jose Morales and a two-run triple by John Castino although the A's actually outhit them 22-20 in a wild of- By Tha Associated Prrsl It was like getting your pockets picked twice in the same day. "That was as great an exhibition of defense as you'll see," said Los Angeles Dodger righthander Don Sutton after watching his outfielders take away two seemingly sure-fire hits Sunday from San Diego's Gene Tenace.

Derrel Thomas made a leaping catch of Tenace's vicious line drive to left center in the second inning, and Dusty Baker robbed Tenace of a homer in the fourth when he reached over the bullpen gate in left to snare the ball. Those two defensive gems, plus some timely hitting and pitching, gave the streaking Dodgers their eighth straight victory with a 3-1 triumph over the Padres. Sutton struck out only three, but he also gave up only four hits In seven innings. Charlie Hough finished up for the National League's hottest team, recording his first save since Aug. 24, 1978.

Dave Lopes was a key part of the Dodgers offense with three hits, including a first-inning home run. Lopes led off the Los Angeles first with his third homer of the season off losing pitcher John Curtis, 1-2. It was the first time Lopes has led off a game with a homer this year. He accomplished the feat seven times in 1979. The Dodgers made it 24 in the second when Ron Cey walked, stole second, went to third oa Bill Russell's infield hit and scored on a single by Yeager.

It remained 24 until Dave Winfield belted Sutton's first pitch of the seventh inning for his fourth homer of the year. The Dodgers got that run back in the bottom of the seventh on doubles by Lopes and Reggie Smith. REDS GIANTS 1 Frank Pastore tossed a four-hitter, and Ray Knight belted a two run homer in the fourth to lead Cincinnati over San Francisco. Pastore, 3-1, walked no one en route to his third complete game in four starts. He is the second Reds pitcher to win three games this season, joining Mike LaCoss.

CARDINALS 10, PHILLIES 1: Keith Hernandez cracked five hits, drove in three runs and scored two, and Bob Forsch pitched a six-hitter for his first victory of the season as St. Louis beat Philadelphia. The Cardinals ripped Philadelphia starter Dick Ruthven for four runs on eight hits in 2'i innings and coasted to their second victory in the finale of a three-game series. BRAVES 6, EXPOS 3: Dale Murphy slugged a two-run homer and an RBI single, helping left-hander Larry McWilliams to his first victory of the season, as Atlanta beat Montreal. ASTROS 4, METS 3: Jeff Leonard drilled a two-run single in the 12th inning to lead Houston over New York.

Leonard's hit followed a walk to Cesar Cedeno, a double by Alan Ashby, and an intentional walk to pinch-hitter College baseball McNair's homers gives OSU a split CORVALLIS Washington State's Glen Walker and Oregon State's Bob McNalr were the big hitters Saturday as the Cougars and Beavers spilt a Pacific 10 Conference biwball doubleheader. The Cougars won the first game 9 3 and the Beavers won the second 12 11. Walker was 3 for 3 at the plate In the first game, Including a double, as WSU hurier Scott 0'Farrell scattered six hits to run his season record to 4 0. In the second contest, McNalr belted a grand slam home run In the first Inning and added a solo homer for what proved to be the winning run In the eighth. McNair's effort broke the season and career runs batted In mark for the Beavers with 47 and 144, respectively.

The two blasts also Increased McNair's own season and career home run records. McNalr has 12 homers this seasos and 25 during his college career. With the split, the Cougars remain firmly atop Northern Division standings at 61. WSU Is 30 5 2 overall. Oregon Stale is 4 In the Pac-10 and 25 12 in all games.

Washington State won Friday's opener 9 3. OREGON SWEEPS WASHINGTON EUGENE The Ducks completed their first sweep of a three-game Northern Division series against a Pac 10 opponent since 1976 with a pair of wins over Washington Saturday, winning the opener 4 3 and the nightcap 3 2. Steve Crum scored on a one-out squeeze bunt by former Linn-Benton star Randy Porter for the winning run In the seventh Inning of the opener, and Doug Baker's RBI siagle In the seventh Inning provided the second game margin. Thus, Oregon is 14-14 overall and 5-4 In league play. WMntoa Ml "-Jl OrvfMi lis quo 1 4 7 1 McDonald.
