HUSKIES WIN TV GIRLS' DOUBLES ESTACADA Sweet Home's highly regarded doubles team of Marcy VavRosky and Patty Basham, swept through two days of competition at OREGON CITY Sweet Home High School's tennis program hit the top Friday in the Timber Valley district championships. And how. The Huskies not only won the boy's doubles championship, the girl's doubles championship and the boy's singles title, but they had the top two boy's singles players, won the boy's team title and dominated the meet from start to finish. "We went in favored, and everyone played up to their potential," said Sweet Home boy's coach Bruce Flory. "And it showed in the results." The Huskies outscored Estacada 18-13 to win the boy's title as the doubles team of Chuck Hopper and Eric Kaufman, seeded No.l, led the way.

Almost everything else went according to plan for the Huskies. About the only "bad" thing was that No.8 singles seed Mike Basham, and No.12 Ken Kaufman both from Sweet Home beat everyone in sight and met in the finals. Basham won 6-3, 6-4. "It's almost too bad they had to meet in the finals," said Flory. "But what a place to meet." Basham defeated opponents in seven sets, four of which were 6-0 shutouts.

He also defeated the No.2 seed Mike Doane 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Kaufman drew a bye in the first round and went on on to battle his way into the finals. However, the confrontation and inevitable loss had its rewards. Both Basham and Kaufman qualified for state in the Guidry of old fires Yanks to 6th straight Northern Division title. Huskies throttle Pac 10 power Washington State 8 0 Someone forgot to tell the University of Washington Huskies baseball team Friday that Washington State has sewed up the Pac 10's Major league baseball By Tha Associated Prase What was wrong with Ron Guidry? Elementary, my dear Watson.

"I found out what I was doing wrong. I was not pushing off and coming over the top like I did when I threw well," Guidry said Friday night after blanking Minnesota for 8 innings before needing last-out help from Rich Gossage as the New York Yankees defeated the Twins 5-2. It was the Yankees' sixth straight victory and put them in first place in the ALEast. While Guidry was solving the mystery of three consecutive shaky outings. Dr.

Bob Watson provided all the necessary assistance by driving in all five runs with a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the eighth. Willie Randolph led off the New York first with a single, Koosman misplayed Ruppert Jones' bunt and Watson followed with a 400-foot shot over the right-center field fence. Watson added a two-run double off John Verhoeven in the eighth, although the runs were charged to Koosman. Meanwhile, Guidry scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out eight. He lost his shutout bid with two out in the ninth when Dave Edwards singled and Willie Norwood homered.

After walking Butch Wynegar, Guidry gave way to Gossage, who fanned pinch hitter Rick Sofield. "I think it was my best outing of the year," Guidry said. "I've got to establish my fast ball first, then get cute with the other stuff. The problem I've been having is that I'd stay even as long as it was scoreless, but I seemed to relax when we got ahead. "But tonight I had the idea and stayed on top with my fast ball.

All I needed was one good game to get back on top. I just needed to blow the ball by their fourth consecutive defeat. Thompson's home run off John Montague came after Champ Summers popped out. ending his 17 game hitting streak. Detroit took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Richie Hebner's bases loaded double.

The Angels came back on a solo homer by Bobby Grich in the second and Carney Lansford's three run homer in the fifth. Grich also had two singles and a double. INDIANS 4, MARINERS 1: Rookie Joe Charboneau's two-run homer highlighted a four-run Cleveland fourth inning and the IntAans coasted behind Dan Spillner's nine-hit pitching. Mike Hargrove started the inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Toby Harrah followed with a single and both runners scored on Cliff Johnson's single and an error by let fielder Dan Meyer.

Charboneau then homered. NATIONAL LEAGUE Bill Madlock is still sweating out his appeal of a suspension and $5,000 fine. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirate in-fielder is making other National League teams pay for it. Playing on what virtually amounts to borrowed time. Madlock made the most of it Friday night, slugging a home run and game-winning sacrifice fly to help the Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 4-3.

"I hit a lot of homers here in San Diego, but I don't why," said Madlock, whose solo shot in the eighth puiled the Pirates into a 3-3 tie before his sacrifice fly won it In the ninth. "I usually try to hit the ball on the ground." Madlock said he "hit a fastball up and out" off Bob Shirley for his homer. Then in the ninth, he slugged his game-winning fly ball off San Diego's ace reliever, Rollie Fingers. Although Madlock has been suspended and fined for a run-in with umpire Gerry Crawford during a game against Montreal, he has been allowed to play pending his appeal. Reliever Kent Tekulve tied a major league record with his third victory In three games.

Tekulve, who has not allowed a run In his last 11 appearances, retired the final six straight batters to improve his record to 5-0.
