16 Western Star. Nelson Wright, Albany. If the morning sling, the noon-tide dram, and the evening toddy are good John, they are. equally good for Mary. If these drinks cause women swerve from their sphere, and render them objects of loathing and con tempt, they also make men the most disagreeable and dangerous animals the face of tho earth.

The cup of Circe turned- the companions of Ulysses into swine; so the cup of in toxicating liquors turns men and women into brutes i and demons. Men not need intoxicating drinks any more than women need them. They have harder work to do in many instances, but alcohol does not impart strength they are more ex posed to heat and cold, but alcohol dilutes the blood and weakens its power of resistance to heat and cold; they have greater responsibilities outside of their domestic relations, bui rum bewilders the brain and stultified the moral sense, so that they are, when under its influence, disqualified for the performance of their task. Jewett. A Speculation.

I was very much edified some time since by the following dialogue be tween "Joe and "Bill, which -'came off" in the bar-room of a hotel whero. lor the ximel was stopping, The parties were sitting very closo to each other, and at the opening of the colloquy Bil brought his big, dirty hand down smartly upon Joe's knee, to render him wido awake to the importance of the question he was about to ask. Bill. "See here, Joe, how much money jdayou liic) -reckon you and 1 ve spent in this old place, lust and last?" Joe, "Well, 1 dunno." Brrx. "Nor I nuther.

exactlv but I reckon we've (hie) spent in this old place, fust and lastA drinkin'. and treatin and sich HK6, as much as six hundred dollars Joe. "Well, 1 guess wo have." Bill. "Well, I guess we have too; but what of it Let her go 1 cares! It's gone, and ye can't git it back again but we had some pretty good times while it was (hie) goin', didn we, and made a good many friends in that way, drinkin' and treatin' and sich like Joe. Yes, that's sartin and no mistake.

Bill. "Now, Joe, I tell you what I'm thinkin'. If now we could sell all the frionds we made in that way, drinkin' and treatin' and sich like, for one-half what thoy cost us, I swow you, shouldn't we make a specula tion?" Joe indorsed the opinion and had a glorious laugh over it, and thus the discussion" ended. That fellow's head is level, thought if he is drunk. G.

J. A Beautiful Sentiment. In playTOndop4lie Gas light," Laura Courtlaml uttered theso bedtiful sentiments Let the woman you look upon be wise or vain, beautiful or home ly, rich or poor, she has but one thing she can roally give or refuse her heart. Her beauty, her wit, her accomplishments, she may sell to you, but love is the without money and without price. She only asks in return, that when you look upon her, your eyes shalLflpeak a mute devotion; that when you address her, your voipe shall be gontlo, loving and kind.

That you shall not despise her because "Bho cannot- un dorstand all at once, your vigorous thoughts and ambitions for when misfortune and evil have do foated your greatest purposes, her love femains to console jou. You look upon the trees for strength and grandeur; do not despise the flowers because their fragrance is all they have to give. Eemembcr, love is all thafa woman can give but it is the only earthly thing which God permits us to carry beyond the grave. Tit for Tat. The Hon Edward Everett, when a young man just out of college, was Invited to give an ora tion in the city ol balem.

At the dinner. Judge Story called up Mr Ever ett by thofollowingsentiment: "Fame follows applause where ever it (Jiv- erett eoes Air. Gather from the woods moss, laurel leaves, and other ever greens.

Then, by the- exercise of taste, ingenuity and a skilful use of the penknife, really beautitul bou quets can be compiled of these flow ers. Take a tnrnin. neatlv oeeled. notched, or cut down in leaf-shape all-around. Fasten it on a stick whittled in the proper shape lor a stem.

Surround it with green leases, and behold, according to your design, an exquisite white camellia or rose. Eed roses, camellias, or dahlias can be made in the same man ner from beets, yellow flowers from carrots and pumpkin, moss-roses buds from turnips and beets, by cutting them into the propor shape, and placing real moss around them. White or red flowers can be made from red or white cabbages. A friend of ours, one cold day in winter, had lovely basket of flowers sent to ner for a tea-party. There wero two white japonicas; the chill they received turned them brownj and they fell to pieces.

She was in despair. A cousin staying with her, unknown to her, cut twowhite Maponicasout of while lurnips, and placed them on i i tt ine real japonica leaves XLur ineuu did not notice the basket until near tea-time; then she was delighted, and exclaimed at their beauty, and wondered how her cousin got them. No one knew until the next day that they were only turnips. Oliver Op tic's Magazine. A Rum Seller.

A poor old lady in another town, who formerly lived in affluence, had a husband and two sons, who gave themselves up to intemperance. One day the father and sons were drinking at the tavern, with others who were like themselves, when a hearse passed by the door. One of the sons, swore with idiotic grin, he would be the next that rode in that carriage. The next morning he was found dead with his lace in muddy pool of water, not large enough to drown a cat. In view of this awful judgment, the mother wrote a petition to the rum seller.

entreating him to sell her husband and son no more liquor. The peti tion under such circumstances, one would think, might have melted the heart of stone. But the rum se'ler, cut it up, and, rolled it into matches, which he put in a tumbler and set it on a shelf, and every time the old man and his son came into the bar room, he would give them a cigar! and hand down the tumbler of matches to light it, till they wero all consumed and then he boasted that he had made the 'husband and son burn up the pious petition of the old woman I John B. Gough. -Turning -the Tables.

If the wives, mothers, daughters; sisters and sweethearts of the men who make habitual use of intoxicat ing drinks should turn the tables and at once begin to make frequent use of the various liquids which produce intoxication, would not their male friends become disgusted with the drinking usages? Let the reader picture to himself a wife and mother stepping out of the cottage and hastening to" the corner grocery for a glass ef gin before building' a fire in tho morning; then going to thesame place for another nip," to give her an appetite for breakfast then going again, to got something her nerve to wash the dishes and put the house in order; then making another call for some rum and uugar, to steady her hands for the task of patching and darning tho children's clothes. See her drinking when she washes; drinking when she bakes; drinking when she sews; when she cooks; drinking when she sweeps; drinking in summer to keep cool drinking in winter to keep warm drinking with herlady friends when she nappensito meet them in tne street drinking on festive occa! sipns; and drinking at funerals. Let him picture to himself a company of young ladies going trom one saloon to another, calling for brandy-smash, lor giD-and-muk, tor toddy, tor slings, for mint-juleps and whisky-straights, using tho speech of their brothers and lovers. Would notour fast young men turn with loathing from the habits which make those who indulge for to on C. past month foots up to a very siderable sum.

In compliance I proceeded at onco to the house vof the bereaved family, found Mr. Ulery dead, and Mrs, Ulery very sick.

I ha a jury summoned, and examined Dr. Lee, of Lancaster, Lane Wilson and John Ulery, son of the deceased, as witnesses. The jury retired tor a -short time and returned with a verdict, that deceased came to his death by poison administered by his own hands. Tho witnesses all testified that he had been drinking for several weeks, and was very drunk at the time. Names of the jurors are as follows: W.
